Thinking About Dwayne Makes Me Sad…
I think in some minor ways certain things have gotten better. Just before his death DC had zero POC titles but now they at least have Batwing, Voodoo, and Blue Beetle. And while not the same as solo titles, most of the team books (except for JL Dark) also have at least one or two POC members, which I guess is an improvement since the JLA was all-white and the Titans had one POC. And then there’s Morrison’s story about the black Superman that I’m greatly looking forward to. And even if I have some problems with the character there’s finally at least one POC woman on the Birds of Prey too as well as a canon queer one, both of whom are pretty kickass.
Still, it’s not that great a situation and it really makes me sad because he honestly seems like one of the few writers at DC and Marvel who ever actually gave a shit about diversifying the crop of characters. I get the sense for a lot of them it’s like “Hey let me throw this one random unimportant character in here so people don’t call me racist” or something. And gender ratios aren’t terribly great in a lot of spots either.
There’s more positives on other, non comic fronts I guess. The new Spider-Man cartoon has Luke Cage and White Tiger and lead roles and the next Batman show apparently has Katana (though I wish Cass had been used instead). And then of course there’s YJ with Aqualad and Artemis who are professional badasses. And interestingly enough they’re using Rocket too.
And of course Justice League Doom has Cyborg as a member of the team so I hope that continues in adaptations as well.
Darnn, I just really miss Dwayne.

I think Dwayne’s loss is going to be felt for a very long time. He didn’t just talk the talk. He truly understood diversity on every level in a way that very few other writers and creators too. He really GOT it and put it into action.
